Got bored so decided to have a look at the heat control valve. The mechanism is designed to divert exhaust gases onto or away from the intake manifold depending on engine temperature. It's important for controlling the temperature of the air both for cold and hot starting. I found all this out from reading Tony Norton's excellent posts on the G503 website, otherwise I had no clue! It works by a butterfly valve in the manifold controlled by a bi-metallic spring and counterweight. It clearly wasn't working as the spring was hanging loose and the counterweight arm just flapped about.
Attached photos show how it went. Removed all the bits, found the spring was on wrong way round and the spring stop was on the wrong side of the manifold. Cleaned and refitted all the parts, setting it up according to Tony's instructions. It now works
although the spring is well past its best and will need replacing. Hopefully, this will help starting, both hot and cold.
